Here we will cover how to set up Wordfence to filter comment spam. These settings can be configured in the WordPress Dashboard in the Wordfence settings.
Filtering comment spam is no longer possible in the newer versions of Wordfence. The Wordfence team has decided to remove this feature from their plugin.
These steps are only possible with older Wordfence plugin versions.

IMPORTANT: This article only applies to older Wordfence versions. Wordfence has removed the capability to filter comment spam in the newer versions of the plugin. Unless the old version of the plugin is being used, a different plugin such as Akismet will have to be used to filter comment spam at this time. Additionally, it is not recommended to use outdated plugins, as they introduce website security risks.
- Log into WordPress
- Hover over the Wordfence option in the left side panel
- Click Wordfence in the navigation menu
- Click Tools under the Wordfence option
- Click the Comment Spam Filter tab
- Under the Comment Spam Filter Options section, click the ON button to Hold anonymous comments using member emails for moderation
TIP: This blocks when the comment is posted without being logged in, but provides an email address for the registered user.
- To Filter comments for malware and phishing URLs click the ON button
TIP: This blocks when a comment contains a URL on a domain blacklist.
- Click the Save Changes button after choosing the comment spam filter settings
