This guide covers file and directory compression in cPanel File Manager using Zip, Tar, Gzipped Tar, and Bzip2ed.
Each method serves unique purposes: Zip for standard compression, Tar for bundling, Gzipped Tar for compression and bundling, and Bzip2ed for maximum compression, ideal if saving space is critical.

Compressing Files/Directories in File Manager
- Log into cPanel
- Navigate to the Files section
- Click File Manager
- Locate the file or directory to compress

Right-click on the file or the directory to bring up the options menu or select Compress in the top menu bar
TIP: Compress can also be selected from the top menu bar in the File Manager.
- Select compress to bring up the compression options
NOTE: If needed, modify the file path where the compressed file/directory will be stored.
- Choose the desired compression method and click Compress Files
NOTE: A progress bar will start, and the time it takes to compress the file/directory is based on total size and server resources. - A Compression Results prompt will appear with the result of the operation upon completion
- If needed, confirm the compressed file/directory can be found at the path specified in Step 6
