This article covers what to check if a user is unable to receive email through MacMail, but is able to send mail.
Verify Settings
- Verify the mail settings in the application
- For MacMail
- Select Mail next to the Apple logo at the top of the screen
- Go to Preferences and then Accounts
- Select the affected mail account and go to the Server Settings tab
- Verify the Incoming and Outgoing Mail settings with those in cPanel
TIP: Sometimes Apple devices will reject the server SSL certificate because it does not match the Incoming Mail Server address (such as mail.domain.com). Often it is best to use the hostname of the mail server. You can determine the hostname of the server in the account technical details in AMP. - Verify the password is correct for both Incoming and Outgoing
TIP: If the password is unknown, create a new one in cPanel.
- For iOS
- Go to Settings and then Accounts and Passwords
- Select the affected account
- Verify the Incoming Mail Server settings with those in cPanel
- Select SMTP and select the Primary Server
- Verify the Outgoing Mail Server settings with those in cPanel
- Verify the password and port numbers are correct
- For MacMail
- Send a test email from a separate email account
- Verify that the message was received in webmail
DNS Errors
- If the message was not received in webmail, the issue may be with DNS
- Check mail records in DNS
- Use a tool such as dnschecker.org
- Select the dropdown menu labelled A
- Select MX in the dropdown menu
- Search domain.com
REPLACE: domain.com with the domain in question. - Copy the results from the search
NOTE: The result will include something like 0:mail.domain.com. In this case, don't copy 0:. Only mail.domain.com should be copied. - Switch the dropdown back from MX to A
- Search the copied results from the MX search
- Confirm the IP in the results is the IP address of the cPanel
- If the IP doesn't match the IP address of cPanel, the DNS will need to be updated
TIP: If DNS is managed by an outside service like GoDaddy or CloudFlare, you will need to make the change on their end.
- Check mail records in DNS
