Outlook is an email client and organizer from Microsoft and is one of the three most widely used clients in the world. This guide goes over the steps of setting up and connecting a new email account in the Classic and New Outlook.

Classic Outlook
Automatic Setup
- Open Outlook
- Select File in the top toolbar
- Click Add Account
Note: The email account must already exist within the server in order to be set up within Outlook.
- For Outlook for Microsoft 365 and Outlook 2016, 2019, or 2021
- Enter the email account and click Connect
- Enter the password of the email account and click Connect
- Enter the email account and click Connect
- For Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2010
- Enter the name, email address, the password, and then re-type the password
- Click Next
- Upon a successful verification, a message will display the account has been successfully added
- Try the following If the error "Something went wrong" is displayed instead
- Click Retry
- Confirm that the correct password is used with no typos or extra spaces
- Exit and set it up manually as explained in the next section
Manual Setup
- Select File in the top toolbar
- Click Add Account
- For Outlook for Microsoft 365 and Outlook 2016, 2019, or 2021
- Enter the email account
- Select Advanced options
- Check the box for Let me set up my account manually
- Select Connect
- Select POP or IMAP
- Refer to this guide to understand the difference between the two protocols
- Users typically prefer IMAP for its synchronization and folder subscription capabilities
- Refer to this guide to look up the email account settings such as the incoming/outgoing mail server and port numbers
TIP: It is recommended to use the secure SSL/TLS settings with SMTP port 465, IMAP port 993 or 995 for POP, and checkmark the box "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL/TLS)". - Leave the boxes for SPA unchecked
- Leave the box for “Use an existing data file" unchecked unless when importing an Outlook account with an existing Outlook data file.
- Enter the password of the email account and click Connect
- Click Next
- For Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2010
- Click on Manual setup or additional server types
- Click Next
- Select POP or IMAP then click on Next
- Fill in all of the information pertaining to the account. This includes the User information, Server information, and Logon information
TIP: The incoming and outgoing mail server can be set to the hostname of the account. The hostname can be found under Account Technical Details. - Leave the box for SPA unchecked
- Click More Settings
- Select the Advanced tab
- It is recommended to use secure SSL/TLS settings with SMTP port 465 and 993 for IMAP or 995 for POP
- Select SSL as an encrypted connection/method
- Click OK to save and exit the Advanced Settings
- Click Next to test the account settings and finish the setup
New Outlook
- Launch Outlook
- If other account(s) already exist
- On the View tab, select View settings
- Select Accounts then click Add account
- On the View tab, select View settings
- Enter the email account
- Click Continue
- Enter the password of the email account
- Toggle Show more for a manual setup or continue to step 7 to proceed with the automatic setup

NOTE: IMAP password and SMTP password refer to the password of the email account.
TIP: It is recommended to use the secure SSL/TLS settings with SMTP port 465, IMAP port 993 or 995 for POP, and SSL/TLS as the connection type.

- Click Continue
- Click Continue again to sync
- Click Next
- Select Yes or No to send optional data about Outlook to Microsoft
- Click Accept then Continue
- Click Skip, or Apply Settings to apply local language, time, and theme settings
