Email Spam Filters

Multiple spam filtering options are available to all InMotion Hosting customers.

Here, we provide an overview of our spam filter options for filtering spam emails, including SpamAssassin and BoxTrapper.

SpamAssassin

• SpamAssassin is an open-source email filtering system designed to identify Spam using many different techniques available for free in cPanel
• SpamAssassin works by blocking unwanted email addresses before they reach the inbox
  1. Each email attempting to reach the inbox is reviewed for common characteristics and keywords associated with spam
  2. It is then given a score (typically between -1 and 10)
  3. Based on the specific account's configuration of the tool, any mail with at or above a certain score will be marked as spam
• The tool is not automatically enabled in cPanel and must be enabled and configured for each account's needs

BoxTrapper

• BoxTrapper is a tool that filters spam from an inbox through a process called change-response verification
  CAUTION: As BoxTrapper relies on the initial sender responding to a verification email, it can cause automatic emails that do not monitor replies, such as from a bank, to fail to be delivered.  If the verification email is sent using a blacklisted IP, the verification email may also fail to be delivered to the sender, causing the email to incorrectly fail the verification process.
  
  1. When an account with BoxTrapper enabled receives an email, BoxTrapper automatically sends a verification email in response
  2. The sender must complete the verification process before the email can pass to the inbox
  3. If the sender does not verify the email, the verification fails and BoxTrapper never clears the message for delivery
  4. After a period of time, the system automatically deletes the spam
